Read this Interview.

Done? Good. Now, I haven’t read the book Green Like God, so I will not comment on it. Just the Interview. While concern about the environment for Christians is good, the purpose is not to get back to a state of Eden (where God hangs out with naked vegetarians). The purpose is for Christians to exercise Godly dominion over the earth. That means to fill the earth and multiply in it. God intended for humans to eventually be city dwellers, but this was supposed to be a process and it was not supposed to be divorced from rural, agrarian concerns. Many of our industrial problems can be traced back to Cain grasping at the city and building it on blood before it was time. God’s plan for progress was slower and more deliberate and it is displayed in the history of Israel.

God gave us animals to eat and enjoy, and there is definitely nothing more holy about being a vegetarian. When God does return, it will be to rule and dwell with us in a Holy City with a garden in the center. That doesn’t mean we are supposed to wreck the earth, just the opposite. We are to cultivate it, to beautify it. Sometimes that means conservation, other times it means cutting down forests and building roads. It definitely includes a good fillet every now and again.

I would recommend reading some James Jordan or Douglas Wilson.

A great post over at Russellandduenes on recent legislation passing sensitivity and anti-bullying programs, through books teaching 2nd and 5th graders about lesbians, Harvey Milk, etc., and why Christians need to be out of public schools. The post concludes:

“Don’t expect this kind of thing to decrease. The bullying probably won’t go away because the inward character of the bullies won’t be touched. Our culture worships the god of “education” as the savior for all ills, but the ill of the human heart is moral and spiritual. This doesn’t mean that education has no role to play. Of course it is central and the life of the mind is crucial to life in Christ. But as long as Christians don’t reject and abandon this kind of “education” then we will continue to get more of it. Truth be told, public schools exist because Christians stay in them. Our allegiance is to Jesus and his teachings on how we ought to educate our children, and that means that it must be an explicitly Christian education, where Jesus Christ is front, center, beginning and end of every subject area.”

Check out the whole post.

This is such a good post because Wax doesn’t focus on Knapp, but instead discusses the need for Christians to re-frame the debate with homosexuals. Wax points out the presuppositions of those supporting a new understanding of homosexuality with gentleness and boldness.

Wax is right on that we should stop using the “we’re all sinners” line in discussions about homosexuality. Starting with this logic makes it look like we are all sinners who single out homosexuals for judgment and not ourselves. Instead, we need to point out the need for repentance. We are all sinners, but some of us are repentant sinners. Great point.

Always interesting and thought provoking, I felt like I came to know Michael and his quest through the “post-evangelical wilderness” over the past few years. He will be missed and my prayers are with his friends and family.

One of my favorite music critics, a contributor at Paste and an experienced blogger, Andy Whitman has a new post up at The Image Journal. Here is a taste:

I spend my days in the pragmatic, shallow mines of corporate America. You don’t have to dig deep, but you have to dig frantically, hundreds of little holes as quickly as possible. Then I come home, dog tired, and retreat to my small little corner, walled off from the mundane, and where, like Abe Lincoln, I try to make the words sing.

It is a far too flattering comparison, and I know it. I am not Abe Lincoln. But I’m fairly convinced that the earth I tread is both horrific and holy, and that it’s worth the struggle to search for words that are worthy of the hallowed ground.

You should definitely read the whole post.

Douglas Wilson is having similar ideas as me on the subject of America today, though he says it much better. He writes:

“In North America, evangelical Christianity has been the predominant form of the faith, and has been for several centuries. During this time, our nation has walked away from Jesus Christ, and has been teaching the world to do the same. The false gospel of secularism is a false gospel. This happened on our watch., not on Wright’s. Piper rightly cautions Wright about what certain blurry spots in his gospel will lead to. I agree with that. But the blurry spots in the gospel of contempory evangelicalism is not something that will lead to bad consequences, but is rather something that has led to them. We are neck deep in them.”
