Sometimes when I preach or teach I think of Elias Keach. The son of the great London Particular Baptist Benjamin Keach, Elias came to America in rebellion against the teaching and religion of his parents to make his fortune. He dressed like a minister and when people found out that he was Benjamin’s son, he was invited to preach. Having heard his father numerous times, this was no problem for Keach…but a funny thing happened. While preaching, he was convicted of his sin, confessed and repented to the congregation and was saved. The first convert (though there would be more) through his preaching was himself.

I feel like that because God always uses his word, even when I speak it, to preach, challenge and convict me. It’s really a humbling thing and demonstrates the power of the proclaimed Word of God.
